The students receive a full safety induction with each group allocating specialists to receive power tool training. Method statements are required for each activity, complete with risk assessments. John Doyle’s project manager approves them prior to the operation starting at site.

The work is monitored and measures taken to rectify delays and accelerations as required on a full-scale site were taken. The site week forms part of the third year design project, which represents 16% of the third year marks. Each team was marked against the success of their project and learning during the week.

With funding in place from; CITB, The Arup Foundation, The Concrete Centre, Doyle Plc and Concrete Bridge Development Group the project is being
developed and extended. The National Construction College at Bircham Newton in Norfolk has provided the home and Expedition Engineering developed a masterplan for the site.

The project provides a model for future university involvement; Leeds University in partnership with Shepherd Construction and Arup ran their first
course in June 2005. The site is being developed for more universities to send their undergraduates for future years.

The development of the site is dependent on the continued commitment from new and existing sponsors. The funding has been pledged by existing sponsors and other companies are required to engage with universities. It also provides partners with an opportunity to be engaged in a unique development in the way that we educate our future professionals.

John Doyle Construction Ltd joined forces with Imperial College and Expedition Engineering to develop this educational project, which has received wide recognition as an industry leading scheme. The student representatives have provided very positive feedback on their learning experience to the university.

The Imperial College student teams act as contracting companies and have to deliver their projects to time and budget within the five day on site period. The site teams are required to establish their project teams,
set a programme for the works and provide a schedule of costs.

The projects are on a large scale and since the inception of the scheme in 2003 over 250 students have built replicas of iconic construction projects including: bridges, dams, oil rigs, communication masts, an underground station and a stadium roof.
